Each microcode component has a unique function but they may also be linked with one or more other components. The microcode is a deterministic, programmable, and scalable framework that connects hardware elements to one or more microcode components. The system architecture is split into a microcode layer and an application or problem solving layer. Finally, it considers the implementation of the HBC in an FPGA. The paper also discusses the issues raised by the development of a modular system and the impact of these issues on the architecture. This paper discusses the design philosophy used in the development of the software architecture and discusses the choices made during the development of a microcoded controller to address the programmability and performance limitations of the controller hardware. The software components were developed for use in the air traffic control (ATC) system for AirNew Zealand. The goal of the HBC is to provide a strong, modular implementation of controller software for embedded processors.
